music for the weekend; Fruit and fun.
Fruit seems to be my 'theme' for the weekend, and in the spirit of fruit ( and fun) ............... a couple of songs. The second one cuts out too suddenly, but its fun.....
My favorite drink down here (in Florida) is Key lime juice with coconut syrup to sweeten and plain soda or fizzy water. Every time I make one I'm singing "put the lime in the coconut...."
"you put the lime in the coconut and drinkem bo' down..." laugh...really fun song.
I remember the first oil painting I produced from the art set that was gifted to me as a youngster, yes, you guessed it, still life with fruit bowl. Chuckle.
Good question! "Key" is a bastardization of the Spanish word "cayo" or small island. The Florida Keys are a group of islands where a particularly sweet type of lime is grown. The limes are rather small but have milky fragrant juice. Hence "Key lime pie".
ahhhhh maybe you have stumbled across something I've wondered about. there are places like small ports or harbours, usually old and these days developed into tourist attractions that are called 'quay' but pronounced Key. two examples, dundee city quay. http://www.cityquay.co.uk/ and gunwharf quay in Portsmouth http://www.gunwharf-quays.com/ I've always wondered where this word came from, it has some sort of nautical connection but not sure exactly what. And I've always thought its one of these things I should know.
Good choices!
ReplyDeleteThat second one always makes me laugh.

ReplyDeleteDay-O has been a favorite of mine since childhood. It has often been used in movies, but none so well done as in Beetlejuice.

Must be an American idiom, but answer me someone over there, why is the word "Key" put before "lime" ie Key Lime Pie? Why not 'lime cheesecake pie'?
