Song saturday..............and a lesson in sustainability.

I woke up still in work mode and thinking ‘sustainability’; what exactly does it mean and how to get this through to kids. I did what I normally do and drank my morning coffee at my the computer randomly dipping in here and there hoping to find something useful, and this is what I came up with.

The information on this web site is scary……………these figures are completely unsustainable.

Then I started reading about this guy………………….

Jaime Lerner
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jaime Lerner
Jaime Lerner (born December 17, 1937) was governor of the state of Paraná, in southern Brazil. He is renowned as an architect and urban planner, having been mayor of Curitiba, capital of Paraná, three times (1971–75, 1979–84 and 1989–92). In 1994, Lerner was elected governor of Paraná, and was reelected in 1998.Lerner was born to a Jewish family originally from Poland in Curitiba. He graduated from the Escola de Arquitetura da Universidade Federal do Paraná; (Architecture School of the Federal University of Paraná) in 1964. In 1965, he helped create the Instituto de Pesquisa e Planejamento Urbano de Curitiba (Institute of Urban Planning and Research of Curitiba, also known as IPPUC) and participated in the design of the Curitiba Master Plan.
Also one of the worlds leading environmentalists, he believes ‘the city’ can be used as a solution not a problem
Here is how he gets his message across

And on the same subject…………..another song, neither song is the greatest music in the world but the message is sound.

  1. i have thought and looked some things up on cities versus suburbs and rural areas
    a couple thoughts strike me:
cities are more economical for large masses of people
you can have mass transit, co-ops and condense energy use
    but
many people do not like living so close together
i liked apartments and such when i was younger
and my life was more outside my living space with friends
but once i got married and with a family
    a house is nice

    also
the problem with cities is sustainability
how to keep them current and updated
buildings do not always change well
with the ebb and flow changes of business and tastes of people
which leads to large sections falling into abandonment and disrepair

i think too much is placed on the big picture
i believe the way to go is to go small
    look at your house
how much energy does it really need?

i think a small efficient wind/solar power generator
could be cheaply mass produced to power your home
it would be d.c. current (direct current)
most use a.c.(alternating current)because it can be generated and sent long distance)
not needed in a home system
    d.c. has advantages
it is by far safer (it is the alternating current that gets you)
and the lack of friction in direct
means less wear on the appliances using them
light bulbs of edison are still burning
that could take care of a huge chunk of our energy use right there

    and then there is ethanol
the argument there is it can not be produced in large enough quantities to fill all our needs
    well
if we are producing our own home power
and most business are doing the same (granted large energy manufacturing could probably not)
then that frees up usage right there
if cars and other vehicles are a electric (now charged at home with your own system) and gas mix
    then ethanol gets more enticing
it helps farmers - because it can be produced from low maintenance plants - not just corn

    also
one of the big problems is packaging
i really think this is a big one
i believe much more can be done to get this lowered down

just a few thoughts from me

i could go on and on
    but i hate typing

    lol

    :)
