Lunan Cemetery

This is the tiny village cemetery from the village of Lunan. The church is no longer in use but the cemetery is well maintained and visited regularly. The war memorial is very sad, this is such a small village that these 14 names probably represent half of the village school.

  2. I had to stand on tip toe and hold the camera over the wall. The cemetery has a high stone wall and the view over it looks out onto the village and the river.

  6. Is that a memorial or decoration?

  7. There a place not far from here where the church is abandoned, apart from one day of the year, but has a remarkably large and well-maintained graveyard.

  8. So sad. That once mattered to someone. Makes you wonder when and why it stops mattering to someone.

  9. Is that just a place to sit or does it serve a function?

  11. I've seen this in villages in this area.....war memorials with long lists of names, seemingly the majority of the population at the time.

  12. Its a place I just sat...............:-)...............don't know if it has any other function, but it gives an excellent view back across the grave stones an its quiet, My guess is that it is somewhere for the mourners to sit in bad weather, we have a lot of that around here.

  14. I have tried to find the population of the village school at that time, it must have been tiny. This is only a guess but I would think these 14 names represent 50% of the school 'old boys' from that period

  18. interesting comment from mitch. Yes I would agree.

Stone is put above the grave to last forever, but even that decays.
