Book of Kells
Hand drawn and painted by Monks around the year 800, thought to originate from Iona Monastery and later transferred to Kells in Ireland.
I love this book! It is always a pleasure to see some original images etc Thank you for this Loretta :) And Iona is a most beautiful island, I would love to go back :)
Yep I love those colours too, but they may be a little faded from the original due to the time passed. Also I think a lot of the choice of colour depended on what was available, they are all organic pigments and they didn't have the wide choice of colours that we do. In fact.......................funny you should mention that I have been thinking of doing some sort of blog on traditional pigments, dyes and paints, it's all quite interesting. Thanks for stopping by

The colours used are to give the impression of 'majesty' I think, with the use of purple and gold, probably symbolic use of colour.
ReplyDeleteI am always amazed when I see something so old and beautiful and realise that it is all hand made and still captivating.
