garden 2012 no 7, The Frog family is growing..........

Today the frogs were not as camera shy, they seem to be used to me hanging around in the garden. There are at least three frogs, two seem to be male because they were puffing out their cheeks and making a lot of noise. The other one, which I still think is female tends to stay closer to the frogspawn........

  3. I wish I had a pond in my garden, I love frogs toads & newts....they don't get to our garden until much later in the year.
Never mind, the slow-worms will be out soon, and I have plenty of those.

  4. My 'pond' is an old bathtub and it has taken me a while to get to this stage. The bath tub was first 'planted' in my garden in summer 2009 ! Since then I've had a few disasters, I put fish in it because the frogs and 'wildlife' just didn't seem to be taking up residence, then we had a couple of severe winters and the poor fish froze. Last year, still no sign of frogs, I asked a friend for some of her frogspawn from her pond and at first that went well. Then last year while i was in France something went wrong and the pond became polluted and all the baby frogs died, at least I thought they did. Now I think maybe a couple of the baby frogs that were fully developed managed to hop away and escape the pollution. Frogs usually return to the pond they came from to mate and spawn and I'm guessing that's what happened. But.... point is, I didn't find it easy and it's taken a while. But if you want a pond, go for it, its not hard you just need patience.
You are lucky to have slow worms. We has slow worms and sand lizards in the garden when I lived in Portsmouth, I think its too cold for them here which is a shame, I liked them in the garden.

  7. thank you............and so do I. The saga of my pond has been a long one, but now, with my resident frog family I feel fully qualified to call it a 'wildlife' pond. :-)
