Art Sunday; Anna Pavlova, illustrations
Anna Pavlova Anna Pavlova (1882-1931) was possibly the most famous ballerina of all time. She was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on January 31, 1882, the only child of a very, very poor Russian family.
Thank you for posting these pictures. Her name along with that of Nijinsky is synonymous with the art of ballet. Pavlova is legendary and largely remembered for being the first to dance 'The Dying Swan' and to tour around the world to bring ballet to people who had never seen it. That famous ballet solo, with music by Camille Saint-Saens and choreography by Mikhail Fokine, was created for Anna Pavlova in 1905.
Here is a short video clip surviving from the 1920's of Pavlova dancing 'La muerte del Cisne.' I do believe that the dying swan solo is my favorite piece of ballet.
The art of the ballerina is fascinating, I mean these people are super-athletes, got to be admired. I always think of the discipline they must have to do what they do with such lightness and grace.
She was born under the sign of Aquarius. It is no wonder she achieved great success. My father worked as a stage manager for The U of T ballet troupe for two years when I was two years old. They had to do a lot of traveling and during this time my father spent six months in Florida. Interestingly, my father's mother was born in Russia. Just goes to show you that Russia has a lot of talented people.
This is a wonderful photo.
ReplyDeleteI love this one.
