Caravan were an English band from the Canterbury area, founded by former Wilde Flowers members David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings and Richard Coughlan. Caravan rose to success from 1968 onwards into the 1970s. They were part of the so called ‘Canterbury scene’, blending rock and jazz to create a distinctive sound in the same category their contemporaries Soft Machine. Caravan still remains active as a live band in the 21st century.
Along with the Soft Machine, Caravan were a leading exponent of what became known as "the Canterbury sound" - a very original concoction of styles including jazz, classical and traditional English influences. "In the Land of Grey and Pink" was a harmonious blend of simple English pop and progressive rock. It is considered by many as one of the great progressive rock classics.
‘’In the Land of Grey and Pink’’ is an album released in 1971. According to Allmusic, "it is considered by many to be the pinnacle release from Caravan." One remarkable thing about this album is that it has remained in the catalogue ever since its original release in 1971.
i'll be back in a bit to have a listen. ; D
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I've heard this group.
ReplyDeletemaybe you didn't share my depraved youth...LOl :)
ReplyDeleteoh, i really like this! it reminds me a good bit of a cd i have, Fairport Convention - Liege & Lief. ; D
ReplyDeleteyep similar time/place etc.............glad you like it, actually I almost posted that tonight then i chose this instead
ReplyDeleteJust had a thought..............I'm thinking the only one to have heard this before will maybe be Welsh Doug, and lets see if I'm right
ReplyDeletewow, how about that?
ReplyDeleteYou are correct. I have loads of their albums. Great band, awesome album.
ReplyDeleteThe band line-up in your pic is the 1973 version (Pye Hastings, Rich Coghlan, Dave Sinclair, John Perry and Geof Richardson), Richard Sinclair having left to join fellow "Canterbury" band Camel.
Hastings, Coghlan and Richardson are still band members to this day, and featured heavily in BBC2's recent "Prog Week-end".
Great post.
Thank you, completely new to me.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, "In The Land Of Grey And Pink" has sold well over a million copies worldwide, but Decca/Deram only recently awarded Caravan the appropriate Gold Disc (because record execs. thought the album was too far out of mainstream to deserve one. idiots).
ReplyDeletehi Doug...........knew I could rely on you :) yes yes ans yes again, they are a great band, this particular album has consistently sold well over the years and YES.................the execs are idiots not to recognise and award them sooner
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about them. They sound good. But I will have to wait until I can actually listen.
