What is it with builders, plumbers etc ????? I still have odd bits to finish in my kitchen because I got fed up with the joiner lettin me down, not turning up, making a mess etc so I sacked him. A plumber was supposed to fit new taps in my bathroom yesterday, he didn't show. Today a builder is supposed to do some concrete repair work in my garden, It's 9.30 and he's not here, no phone call, nothing. He said 8 am so I guess he's not going to show either. Grrrrrrrrrr

  1. It's at times like this that makes me wish I were a handywoman. LOL. If the weather's nice, they may have got sunstroke or something. Check all the local hospitals, or maybe they're being kidnapped by aliens.

  2. My builder sucks. He did a fine job on the house, but has failed miserably in living up to the terms of the one year warranty.

  3. yep me too, at least the girls today have a better chance of doing stuff like that. My daughters took woodwork and stuff at school right along side the boys, I was not given that choice, girls cooked and sewed and boys did wood work and metal work. So glad thats all changed.

  4. It really stinks to have to be at someone's mercy when you need something done. I am fortunate to have married a very competant guy who loves a challenge, plus I am quite a "do-it-yourselfer" also. I hear such horror stories about builders and their lapses.

  6. my late husband was one of those do it yourselfers.... it often took a long time for him to get around to it... but it was always done right, finished and cleaned up.... I hate when workers don't clean up after themselves.... it's part of the job! good luck and stay calm!

  7. I hope you get your plumbing straightened out. I don't know what it is with contractors anymore either. The "Pride in 'Work" ethic seems to have gone the way of so many other civilities. Hugs Lovely Lady.

  8. I have noticed here that with the economy being slow, tradespeople seem to be more accommodating and available. Generally the problems come into play when jobs run over the estimated time and new jobs begin, they don't want to turn down work and attempt to juggle jobs.

  9. welcome to home repairs 101. rule#1: ONLY hire out what you are absolutely positive you cant do yourself OR have a friend, family member or the handy neighbor help you do. you would be amazed at the amount of FREE information online, THIS OLD HOUSE for one and POPULAR MECHANICS another, that is not only informative, but most times has step by step guides. there is no real mystery to this stuff...its all in how much of a challenge you are up for. im working class poor and have taken on projects i had to get done....and they turned out GREAT. with the exception of final hook up to the electric BOX, i have run wiriing, ripped out old plumbing, roof repairs, drywall removal and installation (and the FUN of all the plastering, not to mention sanding it down once its dry and then painting), cutting and installing real wood trim for windows, baseboards and crown moulding. with some reading, REreading and several test peices you can do ANYTHING if you are determined enough. dont feel bad though, the reason i started DOING all this in the first place was the house in Fl needed things and we couldnt get anyone to show up either! the choice of waiting until they are slow enough to come give an estimate or doing it yourself when it NEEDS doing, was a no brainer. i have to say however, my ex was in construction (commercial stuff) and knew loads of tricks on how to do anything.....thankfully too, he showed ME how to do them. invest in some basic tools and read up...you ll soon surprise yourself and who knows, maybe YOU can start a business as the ONLY company that comes out and does what needs doing, on time, EVERY TIME and does it exceptionally WELL.....and for a reasonable price. good luck...

  10. Tell me about it. If this guy (who was my neighbor) wasnt so good and came so cheap for me, Id fire him. He didnt show yesterday or the day before. I called him and he called me yesterday with another lame a$$ excuse of hurting his shoulder and needed meds and rest. Now I understand people get hurt but this guy is always really late or doesnt show and always has stupid excuses. If he was really busy with other jobs Id understand but hes unemployed! They need the money that I could pay him.......I know this for a fact cuz his gf was my neighbor.

So like you, I sit here all day waiting and hear nothing and get madder and madder. Perhaps it has something to do with having either brains or brawn? lol

  11. Don't you just hate that? I know I do when that happens. Anytime when someone says they are turning up and are not on time. Just a phone call from them, whether visitor or tradesman, would fix the tension. I know there's times I've sat waiting for someone, when I've had other things to do with my time. There's no excuse for it when there's such a thing as a telephone to say 'I'll be late' etc.

  12. LOL...............yeah Sea maybe yr right, at least that thought makes me feel a bit better about the whole thing. Problem is .... my 'brains' such as they are, don't give me the physical coordination or strength to do the stuff I am forced to ask trades men to do for me.

  13. Well mine showed up today. But when he called , I was just going in the shower. He said he would wait, I said dont, I dont take that long. He said ok 15min. An hr. later he shows up with all kinds of stories. He even called me in between and was still really late. He came and did a few things and now went to the store for my new potty and some paint. I wonder how many hrs that will take lol. He is hurting tho and took some really strong meds. I sure hope he doesnt get hurt here. I even told him perhaps he should wait till its better. I just wanted to know so I dont hang around here. And next week my grandson will be here so I really have to know whats going on. Hes a flake and my bf thinks he might be doing drugs. But hes cheap and his work is really good, he can build or fix anything. But time is money for me too and I dont know how much longer I can deal with this. I know kurt is getting mad, especially when the guy shows up at nite to work.
