The decorating continues.

Finished the living room, but don’t relax it’s on to the bedroom. I’m going to move into the little back bedroom that I’ve been using as a guest room and today I started stripping the walls.

So now I’m taking a little break, having a coffee and catching up here, but soon, well as soon as I’ve posted this, I’m back to do some more wallpaper stripping. This is the state of it now, not pretty I know, but my new paper (shown above) IS  pretty and it will look good once finished. This yellow paper is the first wallpaper to be pasted to this wall when the house was new.

I found it underneath a few layers of more modern paper. I think the yellow roses are quite old and I managed to get some off the wall undamaged. I’m considering making a piece of art work for the bedroom wall and using some of the old yellow rose paper somewhere in the art work. I like the idea of continuity.

This is my new computer corner in the living room. This games table has been stored in my shed for years and I’m so happy to find a space for it.

The inlaid chess board top turns over to reveal a green felt card table. My father made this table many years ago and this is the first time I’ve been able to use it.

And………..back to decorating the bedroom.

  3. Sounds like lots of hard work but worth it in the end, old wallpaper that has been hidden for decades is always fascinating, there was some of that going back to the turn of the 20th century in the last place I lived before this. Your table is a masterpiece too....keep up the good work.

  4. Your new paper looks like quality fabric, quite rich looking. That should make for a nice soft look in the room. My last house had woven grass cloth pasted directly to the builder's dry wall, for 20 years. When I renovated, we had to bring in someone to remove the old drywall, because the grass cloth had bonded to it. Two-thirds of the first level of the house had the wall board replaced. People just don't properly prepare and seal new walls before paper or paint is applied.

I love your games table. I've always like that look and the multipurpose design. In fact I need a new dining table and I've been looking at an octagonal shaped one made of pecan wood that flips over to green felt.

  5. I hate wallpaper stripping, particularly when there are several layers. The place where I am now has that textured paper, I'm just painting over it.

  6. What a lovely table, I'm sure your papa would be pleased that you're still able to use it. A good idea for the old wallpaper too. Continuity is important.

Personally I detest decorating and hope to remarry so that somebody else can do it............:)

  7. Do be sure and mention this in your marriage proposal. I am sure your beloved will be enchanted.

    P.S. I should hasten to say this is a joke and not meant to be offensive. :-}

  9. The yellow roses are quite beautiful; I am so glad you are keeping some. I would love to be able to use wallpaper in my house, but all of the rooms have walls which meet the ceiling in a gentle curve, not a definite angle, if that makes sense. I would have to affix some sort of cornish (?) to deliniate the angle.

I think it is absolutely lovely that you are able to use your father's table.

  10. I'm not in any way offended Bennett, that gave me a smile.

Having been married to a ukrainian girl and dallied a while with a sebian I'm giving russianbrides.com a miss in future. These days my star rises rather more to the west and your own State of North Carolina. And yes, she's aware of my decorating issues..........:)

  15. I also hate wallpaper stripping. I've just stopped for the night and all I manage to do was one wall and a bit, and thats WITH the steamer.............it takes forever. I've been here 9 years and this is the first time I've stripped wallpaper, in the past I've just done you do and repainted, but now I've taken it upon myself to do one room at a time, strip all the walls and decorate properly.

  16. be warned...............I did that, I ended up doing ALL the decorating in the marital home, I've done ALL the decorating in my own home, and as if that wasn't bad enough..............I also do much of the decorating in my daughters homes. So good luck with that plan, hope it works out better for you than it did for me.

  17. The little back bedroom that I'm doing now has one wall like that. The roof sits quite low over the bedroom and the window wall has, as you describe, a gentle slope towards the ceiling. The best thing about stripping wallpaper is seeing whats underneath, its like a history project, you find writing and peoples names and dates all written on walls. And the old wall paper you find is fascinating. I've found tiny scraps of an even older paper that must have been put up before the yellow roses, I've kept a few small pieces to use in my art work.

  18. exactly...............its the one thing that makes stripping wallpaper interesting.............seeing what appears underneath, I find it fascinating.
