Art Sunday; Fauvism

and to set the scene, a few photos

Les Fauves (French for The Wild Beasts) were a short-lived and loosly grouped movement  in early twentieth art. These works prioritized painting technique and vivid, strong colour over the realistic values retained by Impressionism. While Fauvism as a style began around 1900 and continued beyond 1910, the movement as such lasted only three years, 1905–1907, and had three exhibitions. The leaders of the movement were Henri Matisse and André Derain.

Besides Matisse and

Derain,
the other artists in the movement included Albert Marquet,
Charles Camoin,
Louis Valtat,
the Belgian painter Henri Evenepoel,
Jean Puy,

Maurice de Vlaminck,
Alfred Maurer,
Henri Manguin,
Raoul Dufy,
Othon Friesz,

Georges Rouault,
the Dutch painter Kees van Dongen,
the Swiss painter Alice Bailly
and Georges Braque (subsequently Picasso's partner in Cubism)

The paintings of the Fauves were characterised by seemingly wild brush work and strident colours, while their subject matter had a high degree of simplification and abstraction. Fauvism can be classified as an extreme development of Van Gogh's Post-Impressionism fused with the pointillism of Seurat and other Neo-Impressionist painters, in particular Paul Signac. Other key influences were Paul Cezanne and Paul Gauguin, who in 1888 had said to Paul Sérusier

“ How do you see these trees? They are yellow. So, put in yellow; this shadow, rather blue, paint it with pure ultramarine; these red leaves? Put in vermilion.  ”

Fauvism can also be seen as a mode of Expressionism.

Poetry wednesday; Summers day

POETRY WEDNESDAY;
LETS KEEP IT TOPICAL,

''SUMMER DAY''

Hot summer day
Carry me along
Oh, hot summer day
Please carry me along
Hot summer day
Carry me along
To its end where I begin

Long summer dream
Sliding round my mind
Those long summer dreams
Are leaving me behind
Hot summer day
Carry me along
To its end where I begin

Circling like a river
Over brightly colored stones
Breaking up my soul
And taking part of me home
Leaving the other half
To tumble all alone
Love, love, where did you go?

Hot summer day
Carry me along
To its end where I begin
Those long summer dreams
Still spinning round my mind
And they end where they begin

And I want to grab that river
And stop the love that's dying
Because I know that somewhere
Deep inside my soul you're still lying
Waiting to awaken
And shake that river's flow
Love, love, where did you go?

They told me that the sun turned green
I said I didn't know
And they told me that the moon turned blue
And I said it didn't show
And they told me that I looked a fool
And I said I'd let that go
But when they told me that our love was dead
I had to turn and go

Oh love, love, love, love
Love, where did you go?

Hot summer day
Carry me along
To its end where I begin
Long summer dreams
Sliding round my mind
And they end where they begin

Circling like a river
Over brightly colored stones
Breaking up my soul
And taking part of me home
Leaving the other half
To tumble all alone
Love, love, where did you go?

The photos were all taken in and around Las Vegas, Nevada.

It's a Beautiful Day was a band formed in San Francisco, California in 1967, the brainchild of violinist and vocalist David LaFlamme. The band's debut album, It's a Beautiful Day, released in 1969, featured the tracks "White Bird", "Hot Summer Day", "Time Is" and "Bombay Calling".

Shakespear;
Shall I compare thee to a summer day??

1.    Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
2. Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
3. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
4. And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
5. Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
6. And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
7. And every fair from fair sometime declines,
8. By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed:
9. But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
10. Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
11. Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
12. When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,
13. So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
14. So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

A beautiful weekend in the garden & no camera !!

This weekend was the best so far this year and I managed to spend quite a few hours out in the garden.

It was one of those absolutely beautiful hot summer days when the sun is so strong it shines through the plants and lights up the leaves leaving gorgeous dappled light patterns every where.

On days like this I miss my camera so very much.

So desperate was I to capture this summer day and the moving patterns of light and shadow,

I resorted to taking photographs with my mobile phone.............no substitute for a 'real' camera, but the best I can do right now.
